A Great Love for Saint Petersburg

Russia, Saint Petersburg

A solo exhibition that brought together a love for Saint Petersburg, multimedia, and artificial intelligence technologies.

Saint Petersburg is rightly called Russia's cultural capital: the city is home to hundreds of museums and theaters, and major exhibitions and festivals take place here every year. The exhibition 'A Great Love for Saint Petersburg' by People's Artist of the Russian Federation and academician of the Russian Academy of Arts Nikas Safronov, held from August 20 to October 31, 2024 in the halls of the State Museum of the History of Saint Petersburg at the Peter and Paul Fortress, became one of the season's notable cultural events for residents and visitors.

The exhibition was arranged as a dialogue between time and artistic forms: the classical school, which the master spent years studying, was organically combined with contemporary technologies. The space became a kind of portal, allowing visitors to encounter historic Saint Petersburg while seeing its image in the context of the 21st century.

The exhibition presented more than 90 works by the artist: landscapes, portraits, and surrealist compositions reflecting the author's personal relationship with the city on the Neva. Special attention was given to Dream Vision and classical realism: the combination of light, color, and form created a layered perception enhanced by multimedia solutions. QR codes allowed visitors to move beyond the traditional perception of painting and continue interacting with the works in digital space.

The exhibition offered viewers not just contemplation, but full immersion: the paintings became windows into different states of the city, from historical images to futuristic interpretations. The entrance area opened with an installation featuring large SPB letters integrated into the artistic space, along with a series of works referring to the current cultural agenda.

Works connected with the theme of freedom and the contemporary cultural code occupied a special place in the exhibition. In particular, the art object dedicated to Pavel Durov was created as an homage to Timur Novikov, one of the key figures of Leningrad unofficial art. Through a combination of graphics and textile, as well as references to Novikov's visual language, the work established a dialogue between generations of artists and raised the question of the boundaries of freedom in the digital age.

During its run, the project attracted significant attention from both a broad audience and representatives of the media and cultural communities. The exhibition was visited by well-known international guests, including Italian actress Ornella Muti and Turkish actor Burak Ozcivit, who noted the scale of the exhibition and the uniqueness of Saint Petersburg's cultural context.

The project included not only exhibition activities, but also social initiatives. Restoration work on the territory of the Peter and Paul Fortress was carried out at the organizers' expense, while charity concerts included in the program helped raise funds for local foundations and drew additional attention to philanthropy.

The exhibition's importance for the city's cultural environment was also noted by representatives of government and public life. Saint Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov emphasized the project's role as a point of attraction for an international audience, while Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova noted the artist's contribution to the development of cultural dialogue.

The exhibition culminated in a finissage on October 29, where the artist presented a new work: the performance 'SMS' ('Too Many Meanings'), inspired by contemporary urban culture. This event became the project's final chord and a logical conclusion to the artistic statement built around the image of Saint Petersburg.
